Celebrating with Our Neighbors
September 18, 2004
10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.
Morningside Heights
Columbia University invited New Yorkers of all ages to the Columbia 250 Community Festival on Saturday, September 18. Taking place on the Columbia Morningside and Barnard campuses on 116th Street, the all-day event marked 250 years of living and learning with our New York City neighbors. Its highlight was a concert with jazz and blues greats Dee Dee Bridgewater, the Taj Mahal Trio, and Eddie Palmieri y La Perfecta II. Despite some activities being curtailed on account of the inclement weather, the event featured a simulated New York City Council hearing with local high schoolers and city-council members, a children's fair, art exhibitions, dance and drama performances, performance artists, sports clinics, health screenings, community vendors, interactive exhibits, and much more.
This event was to be held in conjunction with Celebrating Morningside Park-Our Common Ground, sponsored by Friends of Morningside Park. Unfortunately, Hurricane Ivan led to the cancellation of events in the park.
Community Day was a key part of the yearlong celebration of the 250th anniversary of Columbia University. All events were free and open to the public.
